Bob of a simple pendulum of length \l is made of iron. The pendulum is oscillating over a horizontal coil carrying direct current. If the time period of the pendulum is T then:

Option: 1

T<2 \pi\sqrt{\frac{l}{g}} and damping is smaller than in air alone

Option: 2

T=2 \pi\sqrt{\frac{l}{g}}and damping is larger than in air alone

Option: 3

T>2 \pi\sqrt{\frac{l}{g}}and damping is smaller than in air alone

Option: 4

 T<2 \pi\sqrt{\frac{l}{g}} and damping is larger than in air alone

As iron is ferromagnetic substance and we know a ferromagnetic substance is strongly attracted by a magnet. Here current caring coil behaves as a magnet and it attracts the  iron ball and due to this attraction towards mean position of oscillation of simple pendulum , its time period decreases.

So T<2 \pi\sqrt{\frac{l}{g}}

and damping is larger than in air alone due to energy dissipation.

So correct option is D
