Deviation from thin prism -

\delta = \left ( \mu -1 \right )A

- wherein

Applicable when A is very small

 ( i.e. thin prism )

 

    \delta = \left ( \mu -1 \right )A                 (for thin prism)

 

in air , \delta_{A}= \left ( \frac{3}{2} -1 \right )A = \frac{A}{2} ----------------------(1)

in water  \delta_{w} = \left (=\frac{\mu _{g}}{\mu _{w}} -1 \right )A

= \left ( \frac{3}{\frac{2.4}{3}}-1 \right )A

\delta_{w} = \frac{A}{8}

\therefore \frac{{\delta_a} }{\delta_w} = 4:1
