Consider following statement

1. An electromagnetic wave incident upon a perfectly absorbing surface exerts pressure equal to that when the wave is incident upon a perfectly reflecting surface

2. The radiation pressure is directly proportional to the magnitude of poynting vector

Which of the statements given above is/are correct

Option: 1

(1)only

Option: 2

(2)only

Option: 3

Both

Option: 4

None

Answers (1)

As we have learnt

Energy density of EM wave -

\mu =\frac{1}{2} \epsilon _{o}E^{2}+ \frac{B^{2}}{2\mu_{o}}

- wherein

E = Electric field

B = Magnetic field

\epsilon _{o} = Permittivity of vacuum

Poynting vector=\frac{Energy}{Area\times Time}

                      =\frac{Eneergy\times distance}{\left ( Area\times dist \right )\times time}= \frac{energy}{volume}\times velocity

                     =Energy\times density\times velocity=4\times v

                    =Pointing\: Vector\propto energy\: density

So, pointing vector \propto radiation pressure
