Consider the reaction :

H_{2}SO_{3(aq)}+Sn_{(aq)}^{4+}+H_{2}O_{(l)}\rightarrow Sn_{(aq)}^{2+}+HSO_{4(aq)}^{-}+3H_{(aq)}^{+}

Which of the following statements is correct ?

Option: 1

Sn4+ is the oxidizing agent because it undergoes oxidation

Option: 2

Sn4+ is the reducing agent because it undergoes oxidation

Option: 3

As  learned in concept

Reducing Agent -

A substance that act as a donor of electron is called reducing agent. Reducing agent itself gets oxidised.

- wherein

e.g.2Na(s)+ O_{2}(g)\rightarrow (Na_{2}^{+}) O^{2-}(s)
Na is reducing agent

 Let us state the oxidation states of the consistuent imealued

H_2 SO_{3aq} + Sn (aq) + H_2o(l)\rightarrow Sn_{aq} +HSO_{4(aq)}+3H^+_{aq}

Clearly in H_2 SO_3 the oxidation state  of S goes from +4 to +6 i.e. it undergoes oxidation and is therfore a reducing agent.
