During the extraction of aluminium by Hall Heroult process, \mathrm{Al_{2}O_{3}} is mixed with \mathrm{CaF_{2}} or \mathrm{Na_{3}AlF_{6}} as it lowers the melting point of the mixture and increases the conductivity of the electrolyte. \mathrm{Al^{3+}} is reduced at the cathode to form Al.
