Empty box is allowed

So, number of ways of distributing \mathrm{'n'}distinct objects among \mathrm{'r'} identical places such that each one is filled with zero or more things is \mathrm{r^{n}}

Here, number of pencils \mathrm{n=4}
number of students \mathrm{r=2}

Using the equation, we obtain:

\mathrm{r^{n}=2^{4}=16}

Total number of ways: 16
