During extraction of iron from its oxide ore, hot air in blown from bottom of blast furnace so that the coke is burnt to give high temperature upto 2200 K at lower portion of furnace only. Then, CO and heat rises to upper part of furnace.
The temperature is lower in upper part where the iron oxide get reduced at different temperature.

At 500-800 K, iron oxide gets reduced only by CO.

\begin{aligned} & 3 \mathrm{Fe}_2 \mathrm{O}_3+\mathrm{CO} \rightarrow 2 \mathrm{Fe}_3 \mathrm{O}_4+\mathrm{CO}_2 \\ & \mathrm{Fe}_3 \mathrm{O}_4+4 \mathrm{CO} \rightarrow 3 \mathrm{Fe}+4 \mathrm{CO}_2 \\ & \mathrm{Fe}_2 \mathrm{O}_3+\mathrm{CO} \rightarrow 2 \mathrm{FeO}+\mathrm{CO}_2 \end{aligned}

At 900-1500 K, iron oxide is reduced by both C and CO.

\begin{aligned} & \mathrm{C}+\mathrm{CO}_2 \rightarrow 2 \mathrm{CO} \\ & \mathrm{FeO}+\mathrm{CO} \rightarrow \mathrm{Fe}+2 \mathrm{CO} \end{aligned}

The Pig iron is obtained from the furnace which contains 4% carbon and impurities like P, S, Si, Mn.
