When four He nuclei are fused together, one oxygen nucleus is formed. The reaction is

4{ }_2^4 \mathrm{He} \rightarrow{ }_8^{16} \mathrm{O}

Mass defect, \Delta \mathrm{m}=4 \mathrm{~m}_{\mathrm{He}}-\mathrm{m}_{\mathrm{O}}

\therefore \Delta \mathrm{m}=4 \times 4.0026 \mathrm{u}-15.9994 \mathrm{u}=0.011 \mathrm{u}

Equivalent energy,

\mathrm{E}=\Delta \mathrm{mc}^2=0.011 \times 931 \mathrm{MeV}=10.24 \mathrm{MeV}
