We know that the equation

\mathrm{a x^2+b y^2+2 h x y+2 g x+2 f y+c=0}

represent a rectangular hyperbola if \mathrm{\Delta \neq 0, h^2>a b} and \mathrm{a+b=0}.

\mathrm{\therefore }The given equation represents a rectangular hyperbola if \mathrm{4+k=0 \text { i.e. } k=-4}
