Reactivity of aluminium towards air -

With O2 forms Al2O3 (amphoteric)

With N2 forms AlN (aluminium nitrides)

- wherein

2Al+3O_{2} \overset{\Delta }{\rightarrow}2Al_{2}O_{3}

2Al+N_{2} \overset{\Delta }{\rightarrow}2AlN

 

 

Al2O3 reacts with carbon (coke) and nitrogen to give,

Al_{2}O_{3}+N_{2}+3C\rightarrow 2AlN+3CO
