For irreversible reaction, rate of reaction only depends on the concentration of reactants only. Generally, they do not depend on product concentration. 
Thus, the rate of reaction is proportional to concentration of reactants. 
The representation of rate of reaction in terms of the concentration of the reactants is called rate law.
For a complex reaction, rate law can only be established by experiments? and may differ for the same reaction at different conditions.
