During the transformation of the reactants into products, old bonds break, and new bonds form. Before the bonds break, the molecules deform or bend and get to a high-energy unstable.  Energy must be supplied to the molecules to reach this state. This energy is the activation energy, and the transient state is known as the transition state.

The transition state’s energy is higher than either the reactants or products. Hence, the activation energy is always positive, irrespective of whether the reaction proceeds forward or backward.

If the activation energy is very high, the rate of reaction slows down.
