Silica is added to Copper matte followed by hot air blast. It converts impurities such as FeS and FeO into slag. Whereas Copper present in \mathrm{Cu_{2}S/ Cu_{2}O} is extracted. 

The various reactions involved in extraction of copper from cuprous oxide are:

\begin{aligned} & 2 \mathrm{FeS}+3 \mathrm{O}_2 \rightarrow 2 \mathrm{FeO}+2 \mathrm{SO}_2 \\ & \mathrm{FeO}+\mathrm{SiO}_2 \rightarrow \mathrm{FeSiO}_3 \text { (slag) } \\ & 2 \mathrm{Cu}_2 \mathrm{~S}+3 \mathrm{O}_2 \rightarrow 2 \mathrm{Cu}_2 \mathrm{O}+2 \mathrm{SO}_2 \\ & 2 \mathrm{Cu}_2 \mathrm{O}+\mathrm{Cu}_2 \mathrm{~S} \rightarrow 6 \mathrm{Cu}+\mathrm{SO}_2 \end{aligned}

The solidified copper obtained has blistered appearance due to the evolution of \mathrm{SO_2} and so it is also called blister copper.
