At constant temperature and pressure rates of diffusion \mathrm{(r)} of different gasses are inversly proportional to the square roots of their molecular masses \mathrm{M} . i.e, \mathrm{r \alpha \frac{1}{\sqrt{M}}}

under indentical conditions of temperature and pressure , if the rates of diffusion of \mathrm{H_{2}} and \mathrm{O_{2}} are \mathrm r_{H_{2}} and \mathrm r_{O_{2}} respectivelly, then

\mathrm {\frac{r_{\mathrm{H}_2}}{r_{\mathrm{O}_2}}=\sqrt{\frac{\mathrm{MO}_2}{\mathrm{MH}_2}}=\frac{\sqrt{32}}{\sqrt{2}}=4 \Rightarrow D_{\mathrm{H}_2}=4 \times r_{\mathrm{O}_2}}
