Vertex -

 

The point of intersection of a conic with its axis.

- wherein

 

 

 x^2+4x+y+1=0 can be rewritten as

x^2+4x+4+y+1=4

\Rightarrow \left ( x+2 \right )^2=-y+3

\Rightarrow \left ( x+2 \right )^2=-\left ( y-3 \right )

Thus the vertex is (-2,3).
