Water Hyacinth ( Eichhornia crassipes) is used to treat waste water. These can absorb heavy metals like lead, cadmium, mercury and nickel thereby making it suitable for biocleaning of industrial wastewater.
However, these plants are one of the fastest growing and when their growth is not controlled, they can cover lakes and ponds entirely and cause eutrophication.
