As we have learnt, 

\mathrm{PbSO}_{4}\text{ and }\mathrm{PbCl}_{2} are insoluble in cold water and hence the soluble reagent \mathrm{Pb}\left(\mathrm{NO}_{3}\right)_{2} can be used to remove \mathrm{SO}_{4}^{2-}\text{and }\mathrm{Cl}^{-} in the form of their respective precipitates.
