In an 8 × 8 chessboard a queen placed anywhere can attack another piece if the piece is present in the same row, or in the same column or in any diagonal position in any possible 4 directions, provided there is no other piece in between in the path from the queen to that piece.

The columns are labelled a to h (left to right) and the rows are numbered 1 to 8 (bottom to top). The Position of a piece is given by the combination of column and row labels. For example, position c5 means that the piece is in cth column and 5th row.

The question asks us to find the number of positions from where the queen cannot attack any of the pieces. The pieces on the board are a1, a3, b4, d7, h7, and h8.

The queen can attack any piece that is in the same row, column, or diagonal as the queen. The columns that the queen cannot attack are A, B, D, and H. The queen can also attack any piece that is on the same diagonal as the pieces at a1 and h8.

Therefore, the queen can only attack pieces that are in the columns C, E, F, and G, and the diagonals that go through the pieces at a1 and h8.

The only positions in these columns and diagonals where the queen cannot attack any of the pieces are e2, f2, g2, and g5. Therefore, there are a total of 4 positions from where the queen cannot attack any of the pieces.

Here is a table that summarizes the positions where the queen cannot attack any of the pieces:

Position

Reason

e2

The queen cannot attack any piece in the column E or the diagonal that goes through a1 and h8.

f2

The queen cannot attack any piece in the column F or the diagonal that goes through a1 and h8.

g2

The queen cannot attack any piece in the column G or the diagonal that goes through a1 and h8.

g5

The queen cannot attack any piece in the column G or the diagonal that goes through h7 and a3.

The table shows that there are a total of 4 positions from where the queen cannot attack any of the pieces. Therefore, option (3) is the correct answer.
