A river flows at a speed of  2 m/s. A person navigates at a speed of 10 m/s relative to a river in a direction perpendicular to the river. If the width of the river is 400 meters, how far is it directly in front of the starting point when it reaches the other bank?

Given that :

River width, RW=400\ m

Swimming speed, SS=10\frac{m}{s}

Now, 

River crossing time =\frac{Distance}{Speed}

                                 =\frac{400}{10}=40\ seconds

Hence,
Horizontal displacement caused by river speed = speed × time                                                           =40\times 2=80\ metres
