As we have learned

Annual ring -

Annual rings are formed due to inequal activity of vascular cambium. In winter or autumn season, the activity of the cambium is less and cuts off small sized xylem elements (vessels) which constitute late wood or autumn wood. The vascular cambium is highly active in spring or summer and secondary xylem is formed.

Cells are large with wide lumen. The wood is known as spring wood or early wood. Spring wood is lighter in colour and less dense whereas autumn wood is darker and highly dense.
