\mathrm{BeO}  is amphoteric because it reacts with both acid and base

\mathrm{BeO}+2 \mathrm{NaOH} \rightarrow \mathrm{Na}_{2} \mathrm{BeO}_{2}+\mathrm{H} _{2} \mathrm{O}
\mathrm{BeO}+2 \mathrm{HCl} \rightarrow \mathrm{BeCl}_{2}+\mathrm{H}_{2} \mathrm{O}

\mathrm{BeO} is covalent in nature while other oxide of same group elements are ionic. This is due to the smaller size and high charge density on Be which will polarise the oxygen more and have more covalent character.
