Release of Carbon dioxide in the Lungs -

  • At the alveoli, the blood capillaries are subjected to high oxygen and low carbon dioxide concentration.
  • As a result, there is a speedy reversal of chemical events releasing CO2 and picking up O2 simultaneously.
  • CO2 dissolved in plasma diffuses into alveoli.
  • Carbaminohaemoglobin also splits into CO2 and Hb.
  • For the release of CO2 from the bicarbonate ions, the following reactions occur:
    • The reduced haemoglobin is reversed when oxygen binds to the Hb.
    • The chlorine ions are released from KCl and bicarbonate ions are released from sodium bicarbonate.
    • The bicarbonate ions react with hydrogen ions to form CO2 in the presence of enzyme carbonic anhydrase.

At the alveoli, the blood capillaries are subjected to high oxygen and low carbon dioxide concentration. Haldane effect is more important factor in the transport of carbon dioxide than the Bohr’s effect. Carbonic acid is a weak acid and quickly dissociates into hydrogen and bicarbonate ions.
