Fe^{3+}+e^{-}\rightarrow Fe^{2+},\: \: \: \: E_{2}^{0}\left ( Fe^{3+}/Fe^{2+} \right )

Fe^{3+}+3e^{-}\rightarrow Fe,\: \: \: \: E_{3}^{0}\left ( Fe^{3+}/Fe \right )

Which of the following relationships is correct?

Option: 1

E_{1}^{\circ}+E_{2}^{\circ}=E_{3}^{\circ}


Option: 2

2E_{1}^{\circ}+E_{2}^{\circ}=E_{3}^{\circ}


Option: 3

2E_{1}^{\circ}+E_{2}^{\circ}=3E_{3}^{\circ}


Option: 4

2E_{1}^{\circ}+2E_{2}^{\circ}=3E_{3}^{\circ}

Given, 

\mathrm{Fe^{2+}+2e^{-}\rightarrow Fe,\: \: \: \: E_{1}^{0}\left ( Fe^{2+}|Fe \right ), \Delta G^0_1= -2FE_1^0} \quad \text{(i)}

\mathrm{Fe^{3+}+e^{-}\rightarrow Fe^{2+},\: \: \: \: E_{2}^{0}\left ( Fe^{3+}|Fe^{2+} \right ), \Delta G^0_2= -FE_2^0} \quad \text{(ii)}

\mathrm{Fe^{3+}+3e^{-}\rightarrow Fe,\: \: \: \: E_{3}^{0}\left ( Fe^{3+}|Fe \right ), \Delta G^0_3= -3FE_3^0}\quad \text{(iii)}

From the above set of equations, we get \mathrm{(i)+(ii)=(iii)}

\therefore \mathrm{\Delta G_1^0+\Delta G_2^0=\Delta G_3^0}

\Rightarrow \mathrm{-2FE^0_1+(-FE^0_2)=-3FE^0_3}

\Rightarrow \mathrm{2E^0_1+E^0_2=3E^0_3}

Hence, the correct answer is Option (3)
