Leukocytes -

  • Leukocytes are haemoglobin lacking cells.
  • In blood, the number of leukocytes is roughly 6000 - 10,000  per microlitre of blood.
  • Leukocytes are generally rounded to irregular in shape.
  • These are larger than RBCs.
  • The size of leukocytes varies from 12 to 20 micrometre
  • Unlike RBCs, leukocytes contain nucleus, cytoplasm, mitochondria, Golgi apparatus, centrioles etc.
  • The leukocytes can be of two types i.e granulocytes and agranulocytes.
  • Granulocytes are leukocytes with granules in their cytoplasm while agranulocytes are the leukocytes without granules in their cytoplasm.
  • Granulocytes are also called polymorphonuclear leukocytes and they include neutrophils, basophils and eosinophils.
