 For measurement of the diameter of a hollow cylinder following  calculation are obtained for the absolute error of different measurement

\Delta l_1 = 0.0 1\: \: \Delta l_2 = -0.02 \: \: \Delta l_3 = 0.06 \\\\ \Delta l_4 = -0.01\: \: \Delta l_5 = 0.01

What will be the mean absolute error for the measurement

Option: 1 0.01

Option: 2 0.022

Option: 3 -0.01

As we learnt in

Errors of measurements -

It is the magnitude of the difference between the true value and the measured value of the quantity.

It may be positive in certain cases and negative in certain other cases

If   a_{1}, a_{2},a_{3}.........a_{n}   are a measured value

then   a_{m}= \frac{a_{1}+a_{2}+......a_{n}}{n}

where am  = true value

then   Absolute Error for nth reading =\Delta a_n= a_{n}- a_{m}  = true value - measured value

So

\Delta a_{1}      =        a_{1}- a_{m}

\Delta a_{2}     =         a_{2}- a_{m}

2)  Mean absolute error

\dpi{100} \Delta\bar{ a}= \frac{\left | \Delta a_{1} \right |+\left | \Delta a_{2} \right |+....\left | \Delta a_{n} \right |}{n}

  absolute error

(0.01+0.02+.06+.01+.01)/ 5

= 0.11/5=0.022
