Thrombocytes (blood platelets) -

  • Platelets are enucleated disk-like cell fragments found in the blood.
  • Size of platelets is 2-3 micrometres
  • The number of blood platelets in the blood is usually 200,000 to 400,000 per microlitre of blood.
  • This number is fewer than RBCs and greater than WBCs.  
  • These are formed by the fragmentation of giant megakaryocytes in the bone marrow.
  • The average lifespan of platelets is about 7-10 days.
  • These release platelet factors that help in the clotting of blood.
