The lowermost whorl of a flower is called calyx (individual structure is called sepal). Non-essenital part of flower.

Sepals are modified into:

pappus - Hairy structure helps in dispersal of fruits eg: sunflower 

leaf - in mussaeuda, one sepal is modified into large leaf like structure

spinous - In trapa, calyx is modified into two spines
