Second excited state is \mathrm{n=3}.

\mathrm{n^{\text {th }}} excited state means \mathrm{(n+1)^{\text {th }}} orbit

As the electron comes down to \mathrm{n_1=3}.

thus the number of spectral lines is given by
\mathrm{N=\frac{\left(n_2-n_1\right)\left[\left(n_2-n_1\right)+1\right]}{2}=10}
\mathrm{\Rightarrow \frac{\left(n_2-3\right)\left(n_2-3+1\right)}{2}=10}
\mathrm{\Rightarrow\left(n_2-3\right)\left(n_2-2\right)=20}

\mathrm{n_2=n+1}
\mathrm{\Rightarrow(n-2)(n-1)=20 \Rightarrow n^2-3 n+2=20 }.
\mathrm{\Rightarrow n^2-3 n-18=0 \Rightarrow n^2-6 n+3 n-18=0}
\mathrm{\Rightarrow n=6}
