Nitrates of all alkali metals decompose into oxides on heating. The reaction equation is given as

4 \mathrm{MNO}_3(\mathrm{~s}) \longrightarrow 2 \mathrm{M}_2 \mathrm{O}(\mathrm{s})+4 \mathrm{NO}_2(\mathrm{~g})+\mathrm{O}_2(\mathrm{~g}) \text {, where } \mathrm{M}=\text { an alkali metal }

As we move down the Group, the decomposition gets more difficult, and heating at higher temperatures is required.
