Oxidation of an element means removal of an electron or increase in its oxidation state. When hydrogen reacts with alkali metal such as Sodium, hydrogen reduces to hydride ion \left(\mathrm{H}^{-}\right) and oxidises Sodium to Sodium \mathrm{\left(\mathrm{Na}^{+}\right)ion}.
Hence, hydrogen acts as an oxidizing agent.
