  • Statement I is incorrect because in blue/white colony selection, recombinants produce white colonies, not blue colonies. The inactivation of β-galactosidase by the inserted DNA leads to the accumulation of a colorless substrate called  X-gal, resulting in the  white colonies. Non-recombinants, on the other hand, produce active β-galactosidase, which hydrolyzes X-gal and produces a blue color.
  • Statement II is correct because the transformants produced during genetic engineering can include both recombinants (cells that have undergone the desired genetic modification) and non-recombinants (cells that have not undergone the desired genetic modification). This is because not all cells in the transformation process may take up and integrate the foreign DNA, leading to a mixture of transformed and non-transformed cells.
  • Hence, the correct answer is option (2) which is  Only statement I is incorrect.
