Convention in deferning two strands of the DNA -

Since the two strands have the opposite polarity and DNA-dependent DNA polymerase also catalyse polymerisation in only one direction ie, 5^{1}\rightarrow 3^{1}  , the 

strand with polarity 3^{1}\rightarrow 5^{1} as a template and referred to as template strands
