Lyophilic sols are used to stabilize lyophobic sols and their protecting power is expressed in gold number. Lesser the gold number, the greater the protecting power.

Gold Number is defined as the minimum weight(in mg) of protective colloid to prevent coagulation of 10ml standard gold sol 1ml 10% NaCl solution is added to it.
