What is seed production without fertilization?
Seed production without fertilization is called Apomixis. In apomixis, or asexual reproduction, there is no fusion of male and female gametes continuing the process of seed development. This method guarantees genetic uniformity; thus, the offspring is identical to its parent. Different forms of apomixis are found, for example, agamospermy in which seeds are formed without fertilization. Hybrid seed development is an effective form of apomixis that preserves favorable features. We are capable of ensuring crop survival in adverse situations. Parthenogenesis is when embryos develop from an unfertilized egg, and adventive embryony occurs when embryos develop from ovule somatic cells.
