Calgon is trade name for complex salt of sodium hexametaphosphate

\left(\mathrm{NaPO}_3\right)_6. This method is used for softening the hard water.
In this process, calgon ionise in water to form complex anion and \mathrm{Na}^{+}ions.
\mathrm{Na}_6 \mathrm{P}_6 \mathrm{O}_{18} \rightarrow 2 \mathrm{Na}^{+}+\mathrm{Na}_4 \mathrm{P}_6 \mathrm{O}_{18}{ }^{2-}

The \mathrm{Mg}^{2+} and \mathrm{Ca}^{2+} ion in water will displace the \mathrm{Na}^{+}ion from complex anion and they form a soluble complex compound.

\mathrm{Mg}^{2+}+\mathrm{Na}_4 \mathrm{P}_6 \mathrm{O}^{2-}{ }_{18} \rightarrow\left[\mathrm{Na}_2 \mathrm{MgP}_6 \mathrm{O}_{18}\right]^{2-}+2 \mathrm{Na}^{+}
This results in the removal of hardness from water and sodium ion from calgon is released into water.
