Describe the role of CaCl2 in the preparation of competent cells?

Answers (1)

Divalent ions increase the efficiency of the uptake of DNA through the pores in the bacterial cell wall. CaCl2 provides the divalent ion Ca2+ which creates transient pores on the bacterial cell wall which facilitates the entry of foreign DNA into the bacterial cells. Loading of divalent ions makes the cell competent.
