Females and workers in a colony of bees are diploid, but male drones are haploid. The queen bee lays both fertilized and unfertilized eggs. Fertilized eggs, which are diploid, develop into workers or queens, while unfertilized haploid eggs undergo parthenogenesis to produce drones.
