To start with the classification of an unknown specimen, we must follow the following characteristics
1. Level of organisation- cellular level, tissue level, organ level
2. Type of body symmetry- radial symmetry or bilateral symmetry
3. Number of germ layers- diploblastic animals or triploblastic animals
4. Body cavity- Whether absent or present
5. Coelom- coelomate, acoelomate, pseudocoelomate
