In view of the current food crisis, it is said that we need another green revolution. Highlight the major limitations of the earlier green revolution.
The Green Revolution refers to the significant rise in food grain production resulting from the adoption of high-yielding crop varieties. Major limitations of the earlier Green Revolution are as follows:
(a) It was mainly based on better management of farm practices
(b) It involves the use of agrochemicals (pesticides and fertilizers); which has many side effects. (c) Waterlogging and soil salinity are additional challenges that have emerged as a consequence of the Green Revolution. (d) The application of agrochemicals has also led to eutrophication, a process in which water bodies become nutrient-rich, causing excessive algal growth and oxygen depletion.
