11. Suppose the two photographs, shown in Fig. 13.1 and Fig. 13.2, had been taken at an interval of 10 seconds. If a distance of 100 metres is shown by 1 cm in these photographs, calculate the speed of the fastest car.
As we can see from the given figure, the green car is the fastest as it overtakes the white car and is very close to the blue car (initially, the green car was far behind the blue car).
To calculate the speed of the fastest car, i.e., a green car, we have scaled the road. Each marking is 1 cm.
The distance travelled by a green car, which is measured by scale, is 5 cm.
Therefore, 5 cm is equivalent to 500 m.
Distance travelled by car = 500 m
The time interval between the two photographs
s = 10 s
Speed =
Speed = 500/10
= 50 m/s
So the speed of the fastest car is 50m/s
Given, Scale: 1\ cm = 100\ m
The blue car is the fastest.
Distance travelled by the blue car in the picture= 2\ cm
\therefore 2\ cm = 200\ m
Therefore, actual distance travelled by blue car = 200\ m
Time taken = 10\ sec
Speed of the blue car = \frac{distance}{time\ taken}
= \frac{200}{10} = 20
Therefore, Speed of the blue car is 20\ m/s
