What is co-extinction? Explain with a suitable example.

Answers (1)

When a species becomes extinct, the organisms obliquely dependent on them also become extinct. This phenomenon is called coextinction. If a fish becomes extinct, then many parasites, which get sustenance from the fish, become extinct. Many predators for which this fish was the main source of food would also become extinct. Some bees are specifically adapted to pollinate specific types of flowers. If a certain flower species goes extinct, insects dependent on that flower for food and reproduction may also go extinct.
