(a) Ecological pyramids represent the relationship between different trophic levels in terms of number, biomass energy.

The base of the pyramid represents the producers or the first trophic level while the apex represents the tertiary or the top-level consumers.

Limitations of the ecological pyramid:-

  • It does not take into account the same species belonging to two or more trophic levels.
  • It assumes a simple food chain, something that almost never exists in nature.
  • It does not accommodate a food web.
  • Saprophytes are not given any place in ecological pyramids.

(b) Inverted Pyramid of biomass:

This means that the number of consumers is more than producers.

Example - The pyramid of biomass in an aquatic ecosystem like a sea is inverted because the biomass of fishes far exceeds that of phytoplanktons.
