Biomagnification is the process of increase in the concentration of the toxicant at successive trophic levels. Biomagnification takes place in the aquatic food chain. This process takes places because a toxic substance such as mercury and DDT is accumulated by an organism that cannot be metabolised and excreted and tends to pass on to the next higher trophic levels.

The concentration of DDT is increased at the successive trophic level by biomagnifications and it can be 25ppm in fish-eating birds through biomagnifications. High concentrations of DDT results in calcium metabolism disturbance in the birds. It causes thinning of eggshells and their premature breaking that eventually causes a decline in their bird populations.
