When an organic acid reacts with an alcohol in the presence of acid catalyst, it produces a sweet smelling substance called ester.

Chemical reaction :

CH_{3}COOH+C_{2}H_{5}OH\rightarrow CH_{3}COOC_{2}H_{5}+H_{2}O

Activity :

A few drops of sulphuric acid (H_{2}SO_{4}) is added in ethanel and glacial acid.

They are placed in warm water and dipped for 5 minutes, then the content will be poured into a beaker containing water. It will be observed that the odour is sweet and substance formed is Ethyl acetates.
