Pyramid of number:

1. Upright Pyramid: Tree Ecosystem

2. Inverted Pyramid: Sea Ecosystem

In the upright pyramid of the number, the producers are more than the number of primary consumers. For ex: grassland ecosystem.

In the inverted pyramid of the number, the producer is less in number than the number of primary consumers. For ex: Tree and insects feeding on it.

  • Pyramid of biomass is defined as the amount of biomass considered per unit area for different trophic levels of a food chain in terms of their dry weight.
  • Pyramid of biomass is more accurate than any other ecological pyramid as they consider the size of the individuals In terrestrial ecosystems such as grassland and forest ecosystems, the pyramid of biomass is upright. Terrestrial ecosystems have a large number of producers compared to the consumers. So, the broad base of the pyramid with narrow apex makes the pyramid upright.
  • Considering the aquatic ecosystems such as a pond ecosystem, the pyramid of biomass is inverted because the biomass of zooplankton (Primary producers) exceeds the biomass of phytoplankton .
