What is a food chain? Write three differences between a food chain and a food web.
A food chain is a sequence that shows how energy and nutrients flow from one living organism to another in an ecosystem. It starts with producers that make their food using sunlight. Then, herbivores consume the plants, followed by carnivores or omnivores that eat other animals. Finally, the decomposers break down dead organisms, returning nutrients to the soil. Each step of the food chain is called a trophic level.
Sun →Plants (Producers) →Herbivores (Primary Consumers) →Carnivores (Secondary Consumers) →Decomposers
A food web on the other hand is a complex network of interconnected food chains that shows how energy flows through an ecosystem.
Complexity - A food chain is simple and direct while the food web is more complex and includes many interlinking.
Flow of energy - The food chain follows a single pathway of energy transfer, in contrast to it, the food web shows multiple pathways of energy transfer.
