best_answer

A germ cell is a cell that gives rise to a reproductive cell, which in males is a sperm and in females an egg.

They are the haploid gametes, which contain half of the genetic material needed for offspring, and are formed when germ cells go through meiosis. The gametes fuse during fertilization to produce the number of diploid chromosomes in the next generation, i.e., diploid. Through processes such as crossing over and independent assortment during meiosis, they maintain the genetic variety.

There are two types of germ cells in humans:

  1. Male: Sperm is the germ cell.
  2. Female: An ovum or egg is the germ cell.
