Both Acids and Bases are chemical substances that have different properties and behavior in water. Acids release hydrogen ions in a solution.

They have a sour taste and turn the blue litmus paper red. Examples of Acids are Hydrochloric acid, acetic acid, etc.

Bases are substances that release hydroxide ions in a solution. They have a bitter taste and feel slippery on touching. Bases turn the red litmus paper blue. Examples - Ammonia and calcium hydroxide.

When a pH scale is used to measure the acidity or basicity of a solution, a reading below 7 generally represents the solution to be acidic in nature. Reading above 7 shows a basic solution and a pH = 7 means a neutral solution which is neither acidic nor basic.
