An alkali is a type of base that dissolves in water to release hydroxide ions. This makes the solution alkaline with a pH greater than 7.

Alkalis are mainly metal hydroxides such as sodium hydroxide. Alkalis are bitter and feel slippery upon touching. They turn red litmus paper blue. Alkalis usually form salt and water by undergoing neutralization reactions.

They are used in agriculture, medicine, making soap, and as cleaning agents. 

Example - Sodium hydroxide is used for making soap. Calcium hydroxide is used in construction.
