Indicators are a type of substance that changes its colour do to a change in pH of the solution. They are used to determine the pH of a substance, whether its neutral, acidic, or basic, by observing color change at different pH range.

A type of natural indicator- Litmus paper (other examples of natural indicators like turmeric and cabbage juice). It is derived from lichens, and its colour at different pH values is given below:

  1. Red in acidic solutions (pH < 7)
  2. Blue in basic (alkaline) solutions (pH > 7)
